The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is rolling out major updates to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system, effective July 19, 2025. These changes are designed to simplify freight classifications, improve accuracy, and promote fairness across the Less-than-Truckload (LTL) shipping industry.

As a shipper, these updates will directly impact how you classify and prepare your freight. Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and how you can prepare:

🔑 Key Changes That Affect You:

1. Shift to Density-Based Classification
The NMFC will transition from a commodity-based system to one based on density. This means the class your freight falls into will be determined by its weight-to-volume ratio—not just the type of product you're shipping.

What this means for you:
You’ll need to accurately measure and report both weight and dimensions for every shipment to avoid misclassification and extra fees.

2. Expanded Density Scale
The current 11-class system will now include 13 freight classes, with the addition of Classes 50 and 55. This provides more flexibility in classification—especially for dense, compact shipments.

Benefit:
If you ship denser freight, you might qualify for lower freight classes and better rates.

3. Simplified Commodity Listings
Thousands of items have been reviewed and many have been consolidated under broader, more general categories.

Why it matters:
It’ll be easier and faster to find the correct classification for your products—less time spent navigating complex listings.

4. Launch of the ClassIT+ Platform
The current ClassIT® system will be replaced with ClassIT+, a modern, user-friendly online platform with an improved API for automation.

For you:
Expect a smoother, more efficient experience when classifying shipments, whether you’re using a digital tool or integrating with a TMS.

5. Special Identifiers for Unique Freight
Freight that requires special handling, poses higher liability risks, or has unique stowability challenges will be assigned special identifiers.

This applies to:

· Fragile items (e.g., electronics, glass)

· Hazardous materials

· High-value products (e.g., medical equipment, luxury goods)

· Irregular or oversized freight

These identifiers help ensure accurate billing and proper care during transport.

📋 What You Should Do Now:

✔️ Review Updated NMFC Listings
Look at the new classifications to see how your common shipments may be affected.

✔️ Audit Your Freight Data
Ensure your team is capturing precise weight and dimensional data for all shipments. Density calculations are now essential.

✔️ Train Your Team
Educate your shipping and billing staff on the new system, especially those involved in quoting and freight preparation.

✔️ Coordinate with Logistics Partners
Work closely with carriers and 3PLs to align on the changes and avoid reclassification delays or unexpected charges.

Bottom Line for Shippers:
These NMFC updates are a big step toward a more transparent and consistent freight classification system. But they also require greater accuracy and attention to detail on your part. Preparing now will help you stay compliant, avoid costly errors, and potentially even save money.
